Proxima Centauri
The nearest star to the solar system, lying at a distance of 4.26 light years. It is an eleventh magnitude dwarf red M star in the constellation Centaurus. It appears to be associated physically with the bright binary star Alpha Centauri, which is two degrees away in the sky, and about 0.11 light years more distant from the solar system. It is estimated that Proxima may take a million years to orbit its companions.
